My Goodreads Review: A New Kind of Youth Ministry
A New Kind of Youth Ministry by Chris Folmsbee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a good introduction to many of the ideas that are out there about what youth ministry in today’s culture needs to look like. So many of our churches need a reculturing, not only in the realm of youth ministry, but all around – and this book offers guidance on how to begin that process. Folmsbee is honest about the difficulty of a reculturing process and does a good job of reminding us to stay centered on that which matters most – Jesus Christ.
Having already thought about much of this before I read this book, I had hoped that this book would offer hands-on ideas that I could implement. I had hoped it would be a glimpse into another youth ministry program and serve as an example of something to replicate (or choose not to replicate). Instead, this book is one that will require at least one more thorough read, perhaps even two or three, and careful study and reflection, to determine the next steps for my youth ministry program. It doesn’t offer any easy answers – but does offer honest guidance.
This would be an excellent book for a group of youth leaders to read and work through together – it offers an excellent starting point for deciding “what’s next” in your youth ministry.
