I’ve spent hours over the last couple of years trying to make Soul Munchies a “great blog.” I’ve read tips, bought books, followed guidelines and joined communities. Every time I end up with “assignments” that are supposed to help me find my voice and become a better blogger.
And I’ve felt more overwhelmed and less productive.
But sometime this weekend, I began to realize that there are some differences between being a writer and being a blogger …
When I first created Soul Munchies, it was to give me an avenue to express what was on my mind. The original posts were very personal. Things happening in my life, things I had found that inspired me, or just whatever was on my mind when I sat down to write.
Over time, I shifted the focus to be less about me and more about you. That’s not always a bad thing. But I’ve spent a lot less time writing about what inspires me and a lot more time worrying about what I think you want to read.
I realized this weekend that I don’t want to be a blogger. I want to be a writer. I want to spend more time writing than I spend worrying about blogging.
That may mean less consistent posting here at Soul Munchies. It may cause my pageviews to go down, the number of subscribers to dwindle, my name to be even more obscure than it already is. But in the end, I think I will be a better, more fulfilled writer.
Because after all, there’s a difference between blogging and writing … and I choose writing.
