Advent in 2 Minutes

We saw this video at church last night, and I just couldn’t resist sharing it with you. It’s a terrific video that helps us understand the importance of Advent – the season of waiting.

Advent has always been one of my favorite times of the church year. I love the anticipation – the preparation that goes into being ready for Christmas. I never understood people who were grumpy while doing their Christmas shopping. For me, it was a special time. A sacred time. A time to think about all those who are so important to me.

Just the other day I was talking to a friend about decorating for Christmas. She and her family wait until Christmas Eve to put up their Christmas tree. For them, it’s about waiting to celebrate. They put up all their other decorations, but they wait on the tree.

I got it. It made sense to me. But I knew I would never be able to do that in my own life. It just doesn’t feel like Christmas-time without my tree up. And as I was watching this video last night, one thing stuck out to me …

Advent is …

a cozier getting your home ready to welcome a special guest …

Jesus …

The one we’ve been waiting for.

I nearly screamed out – in the middle of worship – THAT’S IT! That’s why I decorate! To the nines! Christmas explodes in my house the day after Thanksgiving. And the whole month of December feels magical. Ready for company. Ready for a special guest.

It’s why I don’t like opening any presents before Christmas day. Although I will admit that sometimes the anticipation nearly kills me! But to celebrate Christmas before December 25 … well, it’s like starting the party before your special guest arrives.

We aren’t very patient, are we? We live in an instant gratification world. Perhaps that’s why Advent is so hard … and yet so special. It teaches us patience. Perseverance. Hope.

How are you getting your home ready?
