Adoption: Part Two
After the Compassion International presentation, Carlos Whittaker and Ken Coleman shared their stories via video of adding adopted children to their families. As the lead singer of Third Day took the stage to tell the story of his family adopting a baby boy this past February, I was once again overcome by emotion. Warning: I am about to be transparent in a way I haven’t been in a long time. For many many years I have had a desire to adopt those children that no one wanted. I have not been in a life situation where that was possible – and I am not, today, in a life situation where it is possible. But I pray that if it is a desire that God has placed in my heart that one day I am in a life situation where it is possible.
As he concluded his story and Lanny Donaho informed him he couldn’t leave unless he sang a song, a group of children joined him on the stage to sing. As I watched their excitement, energy, and joy, I again thought that any child that is born could grow up to be ANYONE! They could grow up to be the next Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Amy Figg, Eric Murray, Laurel Denmon, Jay Beverage, Paula DeCarlo, Dave Helfrich, Kerry Smith, David Rowe, or any of the other people who have made such a huge impact on my life and the life of others. But if not given the chance, they will never reach their potential. They may never become the person God created them to be if we don’t do the things God creates us to do.
So may God grant me the courage to be the person he created me to be and to do those things he has created me to do … no matter how scary and crazy they might seem.
Disclaimer: There are many other people who have made a huge impact on my life, but it was impossible for me to name them all here.
