At Catalyst last week all 12,000+ attendees received a free copy of Margaret Feinberg’s new book Scouting the Divine. I saw Margaret speak at Buckhead Church sometime during the summer of last year and from that moment on she has been an author that I keep up with rather frequently. She does such a great job of reminding us that the thing that matters more than anything else is our personal relationship with God our Creator and Jesus our Savior. As our relationship deepens, our response to God’s incredible love grows and we begin to serve those who most need serving.
What has always impressed me about Margaret is that she doesn’t write so that people read her books. She writes so that people read the Bible. Her books point people to reading the one book that promises to fulfill and sustain us. As someone who loves books, the Bible often gets pushed to the bottom of my list – I can learn about God through other people. But Margaret’s books always remind me that learning about God through other books and meeting God in the Word are two completely different things.
I opened Scouting the Divine at lunch on Friday and found one of the most beautiful illustrations of Scripture that I have ever heard:
“When I open the Scripture, I imagine myself exploring an ancient kingdom. As I cross the narrow drawbridge into this distant land, I picture a castle with too many banquet halls and bedrooms to count – and enough secret corridors, underground passages, and trapdoors to occupy the most inquisitive visitors for a lifetime.”
I can’t wait to finish this book. Look for a book review within the next couple of weeks.
