I think Priscilla Shirer was my second favorite speaker at Catalyst. As she took the stage, I noticed how she owned it. She didn’t stay in one spot, but instead she made sure that she went down each side to connect with each section of the audience. She began by talking about how sometimes God interrupts our lives in order to get our attention. When God intervenes, we have a choice to make – will we go in the direction we think God calls us to, even if it’s a direction that is different than the one we originally thought?
Shirer said we can learn four things about being a leader from Joshua in Joshua 3:1-5.
1) Act immediately in obedience to God. God may call us even though we think we’re not ready. We can procrastinate and hope that God will ask someone else to do it, but it’s likely that God will keep on pestering us.
2) Act fearlessly. We can’t let things in this world keep us from serving God. We should be excited about the treasure we already have! The Holy Spirit empowers us to do and be things that we can’t do and be in our natural ability.
3) Be humble. Joshua didn’t tell people to follow him because he was the leader. Instead he told people that God was the leader and they must all follow God. God will take us to places we have never been before, and maybe to places that no one has ever been before. We have to rely solely on God to lead us through it.
4) Anticipate God’s miracles. God still performs miracles. We should act each day like we know God is going to do something totally different! God blows the lid off of every box we could possibly put God in.
What choice will you make?
